A tribute to alumnus Robert Wright
MSc Probability and Statistics, 1996. A kind and caring individual known for his advanced software skills, love of the outdoors, and dedicated following of numerous sports teams, Robert sadly passed away from an undiagnosed heart disease in 2025.

91¿´Æ¬ is grateful to Rob's father Ivan for this warm tribute.
Robert James Wright was born in Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital and grew up in the nearby small town of Wednesfield, attending the local Oak Meadow Primary School. He subsequently passed the entry exam for Wolverhampton Grammar School, where he went on to obtain his O- and A-levels. Having picked Newcastle University for the next phase of his education, he studied hard and graduated in 1994 with an impressive first-class degree in Mathematics and Statistics.
Still hungry to learn, Rob then chose Sheffield as his preferred option to study for an MSc in Probability and Statistics, completing the course in 1995 and graduating in February 1996.
He immediately sought to enter the world of work, taking his first career steps as a data analyst with Vodaphone. This was followed by a more senior position as a data scientist at Centrica for British Gas. Rob quickly specialised in analytical software systems including SAS and SQL, and was invited to numerous European conferences on the topic.
Having attended an industry-focused University of Cambridge programme on modelling uncertainty, he later played a key role in helping British Gas transition from Unica to PEGA operating systems. A manager at the time noted that "Rob's technical skills and ability to manage all the behind-the-scenes wizardry really set us up for success" during the switch-over. Rob's reputation as a talented IT professional was further enhanced through his own continued development in-post, achieving considerable expertise in Python statistical analysis software.
Outside of work, Rob was an avid ice hockey fan and a dedicated season ticket holder at Swindon Wildcats, having moved to the city for his post with Centrica. He was also an active member of both the Wildcats and Bath Rugby supporters' clubs. The first name he'd look out for amid the Saturday afternoon football results was always Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, or the 'Mighty Wolves' to Rob and the hometown faithful.
He equally enjoyed his own active outdoor pursuits, particularly walking and cycling, and would happily commute 15-20 miles by bike from West Berkshire during those early career days at Vodafone. Rob held a deep appreciation for areas of outstanding natural beauty, and made frequent trips out into the Peak District from both Sheffield and Wolverhampton, as well as regular visits to the Cotswolds.
When not out and about in nature or following his beloved sports teams, he could often be found listening to the music of Peter Gabriel (in addition to attending many of his epic concerts), or laughing along as a regular attendee at his favourite comedians' live shows.
Friends remember Rob as being "genuinely ready to support those less fortunate than himself", and this kind and giving nature also extended to animals. He particularly loved dogs, having grown up with Yorkshire Terriers all through his childhood and adolescence, and would frequently dog-sit for those in his close circle to help out when they were away.
Rob's fondly remembered time in the Steel City was reflected in his generous decision to make a regular gift to the Alumni Fund. Beginning in 2005, his recurring monthly donation helped support others who might struggle financially while studying, greatly enhancing their student experience and empowering them to achieve their full potential at Sheffield.
The Univeristy is eternally grateful to Rob for his kindness and support over a number of years, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends for their sad loss.
