Businesses taking leadership on ecological sustainability and organisational democracy

Over twenty business leaders gathered at Friends House in Central London on 5 June 2025 to explore leading organisational practices on ecological sustainability and democracy, as well as the challenges and tensions that are involved.

The four hour workshop was part of the culmination of British Academy and Leverhulme funded research led by Dr Stephen Allen, with and . For the research, 49 people were interviewed across 13 employee-owned UK based . The detailed findings from this research were shared with participants prior to the workshop.

The discussions at the workshop totally exceeded my expectations. It was fantastic to be able to put such an inspiring group of leaders together and hear them explore critical issues about sustainability and democracy which are at the core of how their highly successful businesses are organised. All of the really positive feedback we received from participants about the workshop was great to hear.
